Blower door guidelines for cost-effective air sealing

Journal Article · · Home Energy; (USA)

Blower doors are a widely used diagnostic tool in weatherization, and have been used effectively to measure building leakage rates and to locate leaks. Often contractors and crews have difficulty determining where and when to seal leaks due to the lack of standardization of what constitutes the more energy-efficient and cost effective methods. Therefore, the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation (WECC) has developed calculated guidelines which are being utilized in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and New York. The two guidelines are a Cost-Effectiveness Guideline and a Minimum Ventilation Guideline. The author describes how these guidelines were developed, discusses the computer calculations involved and how the guidelines could be adapted to various climates. Health and safety issues are also discussed.
