Optical pumping of gas lasers by high-energy infrared lasers can provide coherent output across much of the mid-infrared spectrum. The principal advantage of such lasers is the high power that can be attained by pumping with such highpower sources as hydrogen-fluoride, deuterium-fluoride, carbon-monoxide, carbon-dioxide or hydrogen-bromide lasers. There are laser sources that produce continuously tunable output in this region, but they have found only limited applications. The higher power of optically pumped lasers makes them more suitable for photochemistry, photophysics and atmospheric monitoring.
