Determination of the Weak Phase {gamma} from Rate Measurements in B{sup {plus_minus}} {r_arrow} {pi}K,thinspthinsp {pi}{pi} Decays

A method is described which, under the assumption of SU(3) symmetry, allows one to determine the angle {gamma}=arg(V{sup *}{sub ub}) of the unitarity triangle from time-independent measurements of the branching ratios for the rare two-body decays B{sup +}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup 0}K{sup +} and B{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup 0}K{sup {minus}} , as well as of the CP -averaged branching ratios for the decays B{sup {plus_minus}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup {plus_minus}}K{sup 0} and B{sup {plus_minus}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup {plus_minus}}{pi}{sup 0} , all of which are of order 10{sup {minus}5} . The effects of electroweak penguin operators are included in a model-independent way, and SU(3)-breaking corrections are accounted for in the factorization approximation. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
