The Yough hydro project is on the east abutment of the Youghiogheny River Lake Dam located on the Youghiogheny River in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. This paper reports on the design and construction of the project. The dam, built in the 1940s, is owned by the federal government and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District, as a flood control and low-flow augmentation project. The Yough hydro project will utilize flows which are discharged through the outlet works of the dam in accordance with the current reservoir operating procedures; consequently, the project is run-of-river. The outlet works for the existing dam consist of a 18-foot diameter, 1,800-foot long, concrete-lined (18 inches thick) and steel ribbed (8WF27) tunnel. The tunnel discharge is controlled by three vertical lift gates located near the midpoint of the tunnel. The plan and profile of the existing project are shown.
