During the last decade blade failures and cracks have been reported for large nuclear and fossil LP rotors which have been caused by a torsional excitation of the shaft line through the varying magnetic field acting at the generator. The authors' company have not experienced blade failures due to torsional vibrations because internal design rules have required a wide resonance free band to be achieved. Nevertheless the company has studied these phenomena carefully and developed appropriate calculation methods. The findings of these investigations, the calculation method used and the design principles are discussed in this paper.
