Increased use of power and difficulty in obtaining new right-of-way (ROW) call for the development of additional transmission options to increase the power transmission capability of existing transmission corridors. One option is the hybrid corridor. This involves the placement of a DC transmission line on an existing AC corridor either by construction of a new DC line or conversion to DC of an existing AC line. Few measurements have been made or reported in the literature of the levels of field and corona effects within the right-of-ways of operating DC transmission lines and no measurements have been reported for hybrid corridors. This paper describes measurements of the fields (DC electric field, DC magnetic field, AC electric field, and AC magnetic field) and corona effects (audible noise, radio noise, and ion densities) on an operating hybrid corridor.
