Many C[sub 60] adducts, ([open quotes]dihydrofullerenes[close quotes]) have been described. We study how the photophysical properties of the fullerene core are perturbed by functionalization, since the enhanced solubility in polar solvents of these derivatives suggests potential uses in biological systems where such properties as singlet oxygen generation can be exploited. We now report the photophysical properties of a model dihydrofullerene, the C[sub 60] adduct 1,9-(4-hydroxycyclohexano)buckminsterfullerene. 48 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.
