A Pb + Sb doped material with nominal composition Bi[sub 1.5]Pb[sub 0.1]Sb[sub 0.4]Sr[sub 2]Ca[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub y] was prepared by the solid state reaction technique. The resistance of the specimen prepared at 860 C gradually decreased by increasing the annealing time. The material was characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), electrical resistance, alternating current susceptibility, and magnetization measurements. Results confirm the formation of a newly discovered 4,441 phase (having monoclinic symmetry with lattice constants a = 22.1523 [angstrom], b = 5.9057 [angstrom], c = 19.9598 [angstrom], and with [beta] = 99[degree]) along with two minor phases, 2,223 and 2,212. The formation of this new phase appears to reduce the superconducting properties.
