Biomass estimates of hickory tree components

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6734985

Components (leaves, twigs, branches, etc.) of 37 hickory trees from four east Tennessee locations were cut and weighed. Wood and bark samples were oven-dried to determine moisture content and to establish dry bark and wood weights. Ratios of bark to wood for various components were calculated. Stump and root weights were estimated to be 25% of complete tree weights. Findings for hickory sawtimber trees indicate that 40 to 60% of the dry wood and bark fiber content above the stump is contained in the top.
