A method of recovering an offshore pipeline from the bottom of a body of water is described. Gas is introduced into one end of the line and liquids contained in the pipe are pumped from the other end of the pipeline until a section of the line at least sufficiently long to reach to the surface of the body of water has been substantially voided of liquids. The end of the pipeline is then lifted to the water's surface. This procedure substantially reduces the cost of pipeline recovery operations and has other advantages over methods used in the past.
