Composition and method for inhibiting scale in an aqueous system

A composition for inhibiting formation of alkaline earth scale in an aqueous system consists of the following ingredients: (1) from 1 to 500 Pt. by wt of citric, tartaric, malic, maleic, malonic fumaric or glycolic acid, or a mixture of 2 or more of these acids; and (2) from 1 to 10 Pt. by wt of a water soluble organic polymer having repeated groups with the formula:
