High-pressure Brillouin spectra of single-crystal hydrogen have been measured to 24 GPa at room temperature in a large conical opening diamond anvil cell. The orientation of the single-crystal was precisely determined at each pressure by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The results indicate that solid is elastically anisotropic. The orientation dependence of the sound velocities is used to calculate the five elastic constants, bulk modulus, shear modulus, and equation of state. The data are in good agreement with previous equation-of-state data obtained by x-ray diffraction. [copyright] 1994 American Institute of Physics
