Beliefs about economic growth

A 1976 survey of 1021 residents of the Niagara Frontier region of New York State by the University of New York at Buffalo provides clear evidence that advocates of economic growth see a different kind of social predicament from those who favor de-emphasizing economic growth. Those who would slow economic growth perceive growth as a contributor to environmental problems. Growth advocates think the environment is in relatively good shape and not an urgent problem. Opinions range between the extremes. The dynamics of belief and perception change is evident in all sectors of society, although change is occurring faster in the young and among the better-educated. 9 references, 4 figures, 1 table.
