Specific energy as a criterion for drill performance prediction

Journal Article · · Int. J. Rock Mech. Min. Sci. Geomech. Abstr.; (United States)
The concept of Specific energy (SE) has been proposed as a quick means of assessing rock drillability. Specific energy has been defined in two different ways: (1) as energy required to remove a unit volume of rock (SEv); and (2) as energy required to create a new surface area (SEa). This note critically discusses the two definitions of the concept of specific energy with emphasis on its use for predicting drill machine performance. (JMT)
