SEA (Seismic Event Analyzer): An expert system for nuclear test ban treaty verification

This paper presents an expert system that interprets seismic data from Norway's regional seismic array, NORESS, for underground nuclear weapons test ban treaty verification. Three important aspects of the expert system are it emulates the problem solving behavior of the human seismic analyst, it acts as an assistant to the human analyst by automatically interpreting and presenting events for a review, and it enables the analyst to interactively query the systems's chain reasoning and manually perform an interpretation. The general problem of seismic interpretation is described. The expert system is presented in terms of problem solving strategy, representation structures and user interface elements. 12 refs., 8 figs.
