Use of refuse as fuel in an existing utility boiler

This article discusses the City of St. Louis and the Union Electric Co.'s collaboration in a full-scale test of the feasibility of burning prepared refuse as supplementary fuel in an existing pulverized coal-fired boiler. Raw municipal refuse is milled to small particles. The magnetic metals are removed and the remainder is fired pneumatically to a boiler unit. The refuse comprises only a small percentage of the total fuel requirement of the boiler. The topics discussed in detail include: the test boiler; receiving and firing facilities; potential boiler operating problems; applicability of the process; and the relative economics of the process.
