Presented is an evaluation of conventional, static volumetric and dynamic volumetric techniques for handling the upward movement of a gas kick when the well is shut in and normal kill operations are delayed. Tests were conducted on two actual 6,000-ft wells, one with flow geometry representing a surface BOP arrangement, the other modeling the flow geometry of a subsea BOP stack in 3,000 ft of water. Specific cases are discussed and illustrated, and cover several important aspects of well control.
