Offshore modular crane - Concept design and operation

Conference · · Soc. Pet. Eng. AIME, Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6730918
During the development of the offshore industry there has always been a requirement for some form of temporary lifting capability; for example: 1. To supplement the existing permanent craneage, i.e. for special projects. 2. To assist during the construction and hook-up phases of an offshore platform. 3. To replace a redundant or temporarily out-of-service crane. The type of crane generally installed on the fixed platforms, drilling rigs and semi-submersibles located in the North Sea area are known as pedestal cranes. They are characterised by having a long tubular strut boom ranging from 30m to 55m and are mounted on pedestal structures located on the outboard sides of the installation for access to supply vessels and adjacent to the drilling derrick to service its needs.
