Past and present methods for maintaining and updating engineering documentation have required an elaborate process requiring the dedication of extensive quantities of personnel, floor space, files, and other equipment. On a total basis, the money required to support that process has been rather substantial, while the resulting quality and retrievability of the documentation has not been totally acceptable. Fortunately, computer-age technology has provided the industry with a capability to change past practices of archiving and retrieving engineering documentation that promises to reduce cost, raise quality, and increase retrievability. This paper reviews a concept whereby documentation is archived in computer storage indexed for identification and retrieved for review or revision without requiring a hard copy of the document to be generated or maintained.
