Review of recent developments and the performance of tape coatings for underground pipelines

Compared with early plastic-tape pipeline coatings, the improved corrosion-protection effectiveness of today's tapes - designed for either over-the-ditch or plant application - stems from changes in tape properties (tougher resins and greater thicknesses), better adhesive or bonding agents, and the use of protective plastic outerwraps. Tests conducted on multilayer plastic coating systems indicate the superiority of polyethylene coatings over other types in terms of mechanical resistance and flexibility. Hot-applied plastic tapes and the use of leachable primers are other new developments in corrosion-protection coatings.
