Polyethylene pipe is the standard material of construction used by Columbia Gas Distribution Cos. for new or replacement mains and services operating at 50 psig or less. With 33% of its services and 10% of its mains composed of polyethylene, Columbia has learned through experience that the factors most affecting long-term plastic-pipe performance are (1) the suitability of the material for gas service, (2) the geometric configuration of the pipe and fittings, and (3) the ability of the manufacturer to consistently supply the best pipe and fittings from the material being used. To help identify the high-molecular-weight polyethylenes desired, Columbia's present plastic-pipe purchase specifications include requirements for both flow rate and environmental stress crack resistance. Specially trained operators employ butt-fusion joining methods on the pipe and fittings; socket-fusion joining is an available alternative technique only for 1 1/4-in. or smaller pipe.
