Improving the ceramic quality of thoria powders produced via hydrothermal denitration

Journal Article · · Am. Ceram. Soc. Bull.; (United States)

Hydrothermal denitration offers a method of producing thoria powders directly from the nitrate without an intermediate precipitate. The reasons for the inherently poor ceramic quality of these powders are uncovered through an examination of their morphology. It is demonstrated that high quality, high density pellets can be fabricated from denitrated thoria powders, if a suitable combination of particle and crystallite sizes is achieved. 9 refs.
