/sup 131/I thyroid scanning in preoperative diagnosis of mediastinal goiter

Journal Article · · Ann. Intern. Med.; (United States)
Because pathologic studies have shown that mediastinal goiters are almost always extensions of thyroid tissue in the neck, almost all should be diagnosed by radionuclide scanning. However, little information on the frequency of positive thyroid scans in mediastinal goiter is available except for scattered case reports and conflicting generalizations found in textbooks of endocrinology and chest disease. In order to ascertain how frequently mediastinal goiters can be diagnosed preoperatively with the aid of thyroid scintiscanning, the records of patients who had tissue-documented mediastinal goiters were reviewed.
