Ru sub 3 (CO) sub 12 interaction with Ru(001) and Au/Ru surfaces
- Brookhaven National Laboratory, Chemistry Department, Upton, New York 11973 (USA)
We studied the interaction of Ru{sub 3}(CO){sub 12} with a Ru(001) surface and with Ru(001) covered with approximately 2 monolayers of Au(Au/Ru). We report IRAS (infrared reflection--absorption spectroscopy) and TDS (thermal desorption spectroscopy) results for Ru{sub 3}(CO){sub 12} adsorbed at these surfaces at coverages between {similar to}0.2 monolayer ({theta}{sub {ital RC}}{similar to}0.2) and {theta}{sub {ital RC}}{similar to}10. IRAS spectra show sharp bands (FWHM{similar to}4 cm{sup {minus}1}) for Ru{sub 3}(CO){sub 12}/Ru(001) at all studied coverages and for Ru{sub 3}(CO){sub 12}/Au/Ru at {theta}{sub {ital RC}} {gt}3. IRAS results imply well-ordered adsorbate layers with the Ru{sub 3}-triangle of Ru{sub 3}(CO){sub 12} parallel to the surface. Infrared spectra of Ru{sub 3}(CO){sub 12}/Au/Ru at {theta}{sub {ital RC}} {lt}{similar to}3 show broadening and splitting of the absorption bands. TDS results suggest a molecular adsorption of Ru{sub 3}(CO){sub 12} for coverages giving sharp IRAS bands and a possible fragmentation of Ru{sub 3}(CO){sub 12} at Au/Ru at low coverages.
