Title: Producing high-quality pine sawtimber crop trees in short rotations

Journal Article · · La. Agric.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6721179

The production of high-quality crop trees suitable for sawtimber during a 29-year rotation is described. Vigorous growth of selected crop trees was maintained by reducing stand density with an early, heavy thinning. Individual tree quality was further enhanced by primary crop trees at an early age. Early selection of crop trees, followed by several thinnings to gradually reduce pine stocking rates to 100 trees per acre by age 20, will provide optimum wood yields.
