Wildcatters are stepping up the search for Alaska's next giant field in the icy waters of the Beaufort Sea, where many think huge reserves lie waiting to be discovered. Eight exploratory wells are planned for this winter's drilling season as operators accelerate the evaluation of tracts that drew high bids of $1.056 billion at the joint federal-state sale in Fairbanks in Dec. 1979. Alaska's offshore basins are the focus for the federal government's hopes to increase this nation's energy self-sufficiency. The Department of Interior's proposed 5-yr offshore oil and gas leasing program places heavy emphasis on sales in Alaskan waters. Details are given of drilling and production plans for Alaska's onshore and offshore areas.
