A structural analysis is presented for the large aperture diameter Microwave Power Transmission System (MPTS) antenna required by prospective Satellite Power Systems. Requirements for this orbital structure are severe, with aperture diameters of between 1 and 2 km and the maintenance of array surface flatness from 1/8 to 1/2 m. The proposed structure is composed of an orthogonal array of cables, stabilized by a peripheral compression-carrying frame that provides the primary structural support system. The critical structural requirements, load stability criteria, and parametric load/deflection analysis methodology are described.
