Canada gas exports seen essential to U. S. needs
- South. Calif. Gas Co.
A number of U.S. gas company executives has told the Canada National Energy Board (NEB) at gas export hearings in Calgary that Canadian gas supplies are essential in meeting U.S. needs. According to E. Takemura (South. Calif. Gas Co.), his firm wants to buy 240 million cu ft/day of gas from Alberta because of a critical market situation that the firm will soon face. According to D. L. Smith (United Gas Pipe Line Co.), a United subsidiary is seeking 450 million cu ft/day of Alberta gas, without which the current 44Vertical Bar3< curtailments to United's customers would reach 74Vertical Bar3< by the summer of 1982. NEB is hearing applications for gas exports totaling approx. 9.5 trillion cu ft during 20 yr. According to NEB, Canada has a surplus of only 3.8 trillion cu ft, only 2 trillion of which is deliverable for short-term exports. The main rival applicants at the hearings were Pan-Alberta Gas Ltd. and Progas Ltd.
