Strait of Sicily lines due in record water depth

Trans-Mediterranean Pipeline Co. Ltd. has awarded Saipem S.p.A. a $237 million contract to lay three 20 in. gas pipelines in record water depth, 2300 ft, from Cap Bon, Tunisia, to Mazara del Vallo, Sicily. The 100 mi crossing, part of a 1500 mi project to move Algerian gas to Italy, will require laying operations in waters three times deeper than the present world pipeline depth record, according to Saipem. Saipem will use the semisubmersible pipelaying barge is contained inastoro V.
