Esso's Cold Lake project: modified drilling system improves performance

Esso Resources Canada Ltd. plans to commercially produce heavy oil from tar sands at Cold Lake, Alberta, through a 9000-well, 25-yr development program. The efficient, low-cost drilling of these many shallow, directional wells has necessitated several stages of design modifications to its initial drilling system. This work discusses the development and design of Esso's doubles rig system, featuring equipment normally used only on deep, expensive holes.
