A method is described of controlling exhaust gas recirculation in an internal combustion engine for an automotive vehicle. The engine has an exhaust passage, an intake passage, an exhaust gas recirculating passage communicating the exhaust passage with the intake passage, and an exhaust gas recirculating valve arranged across the exhaust gas recirculating passage for regulating the amount of exhaust gas recirculated from the exhaust gas passage to the intake passage. The valve opening of the exhaust gas recirculating valve is controlled in response to operating conditions of the engine so as to regulate the amount of recirculated exhaust gas to values appropriate to the operating conditions of the engine.
