In order to maintain the proper control over the water for steam, or hot water thermal recovery programs, a periodical determination should be made of the total hardness, phenolphthalein, and methyl orange alkalinity. The determination of total hardness may be made through the use of a standard soak solution. A method for forming the standard soak solution is given. The alkalinity is determined in 2 successive steps. The phenolphthalein- end point represents a partial alkalinity. The method of testing is given with the total alkalinity being found by adding a few drops of methyl orange. The titration- end-point is described. The soda ash required for softening must consider any excess lime which may be used, the noncarbonate hardness which is to be removed, and any excess soda ash which may be required. Solubility curves are given for magnesium hydroxide and calcium or sodium hydroxide.
