  1. Congoleum Corp., Marcus Hook, PA

The catalytic incinerator system at the Congoleum plant in Marcus Hook, PA, was used to handle plasticizer fumes from resilient floor title production, but because of age and war, no longer met EPA standards. On a consultant's recommendation, a 40,000 cfm thermal oxidation system with a high efficiency gas/oil burner and couble pass shell and tube heat exchangers was installed. The system works by recovering heat from the combusted organics in the waste stream, and using it to preheat the incoming fume stream. Approximately $650,000/year was saved by the thermal oxidizer though decreased energy costs and increased production. This amounts to a payback for the system in 2 years, and all EPA pollution requirements have been met with virtually no downtime. (JMT)
