Clearing the air on air cleaners
The author, emphasizing portable air cleaners, discusses various types of air cleaners, including fan and filter systems, extended surface area filters, electrostatic precipitators, and negative-ion generators. He notes that authorities generally agree that a more-effective means of attacking indoor air pollution is to control the source of the problem. If your kitchen smells, vent it with a range hood or fan. If radon gas leaks into your house, ventilate the basement or plug the leaks. The most effective of the air cleaners may have some application in colder climates where people do not ventilate their rooms as much. Or they may have some application in dealing with special allergy problems, experts feel. If a consumer is going to choose an air cleaner, the device should produce particle removal equivalent to at least one air change per hour of ventilation. While the industry grapples with a much-tested product of limited usefulness, the portable air cleaner may still be characterized as one of those things that is a solution looking for a question. 3 refs., 1 tab.
