Determination of the relative sign of neutron and proton transition matrix elements for the /sup 34/S(0. -->. 2/sub 2//sup +/) transition

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Measurement of the alpha inelastic-scattering cross sections for the first two 2/sup +/ states in /sup 34/S shows unambiguously that the relative sign of the neutron and proton transition matrix elements for both 2/sup +/ states are positive, just as in the cases of /sup 26/Mg and /sup 30/Si. Consideration of coupled-channel effects in inelastic scattering do not change this overall result. The present results are in contradiction with the predictions of recent shell-model calculations.
