Remarkable system AM Herculis/3U 1809+50. II. a single accretion column model

Journal Article · · Astrophys. J.; (United States)
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1086/156181· OSTI ID:6715860
A model for AM Herculis in which the X-radiation, optical radiation, optical radiation, and polarized optical radiation arise in a single accretion column is presented. The coincidence of the primary optical minimum with the standstill in the fractional circular polarization and the X-ray maximum is explained as caused by cyclotron self-absorption. The relationship of AM Her to VV Puppis and AN Ursae Majoris is briefly discussed.
