Broadening of ionic lines observed along the axis of a high-current discharge of an argon laser
The effect of deviations from an equilibrium ion-velocity distribution on the determination of broadening of ionic lines in the plasma of an ion laser is analyzed by two independent techniques: spontaneous radiation from the end of the discharge and the Lamb dip. Experimental data are presented from measurements of the broadening of the Ar/sup +/ 4880-A line by these techniques in an argon plasma of a cw high-current discharge (current density of approx.2000 A cm/sup -2/ at a gas pressure of approx.0.5--5 Torr) in a tube with a 1.2-mm diam. A conclusion is drawn about the fact that in an argon laser the profile of the ionic lines observed along the axis of the discharge differs from the Voigt profile.
