Pan American Petroleum Corp. has developed and patented an improved process for the recovery of sulfur from hydrogen sulfide. This improved design, called the package sulfur plant, is schematically illustrated. Although the package design has its greatest economic advantage in plants with a capacity of less than 50 long tons per day, many of its features have been utilized in larger plants. The basic package plant features which have been successfully employed by Pan American in both small and large sulfur plants are compactness, equipment combination, avoidance of corrosion, and self-draining. Three basic flow sheets are described briefly to provide a basis for discussion for certain features, comparisons, and presentation of typical plant data. These 3 processes are the straight through, the split flow, and the direct oxidation.
