Expansion joints are generally used in situations where bellows and other components are exposed to elevated temperatures. Typical applications include FCCU standpipes, flue gas lines, vessel internals, heat exchangers and superheater steam distribution systems. In these and other applications, the importance of determining the actual bellows material temperature (ABMT) cannot be overemphasized. Because the bellows itself is physically removed from direct exposure to the flow stream, the actual ABMT is rarely as high as the temperature of the media flowing through it. Successful performance of a metal bellows is dependent upon its material properties. These material properties are, in turn, dependent upon the ABMT. Overestimating the ABMT can have serious consequences. The paper describes the basic steps required for the calculation of the average ABMT, then discusses cold work considerations and other design considerations.
