Alaska's interior forests: in the eye of the storm

By December 1979, Congress will divide some 80 million acres of ''''national interest'' Alaskan land into national parks, wildlife refuges, national forests, and wild and scenic rivers. Much controversy has developed over how much development will be allowed in the nation's largest undeveloped and unroaded region. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 has raised serious questions concerning the future of the timber industry in Alaska's interior forests, as any major timber industry will depend to a large extent on how much land is allocated to multiple use management. The more land that is locked up in special use, the less forestry there will be. Conservationists fear that multiple use management will not afford the protection required to maintain the full spectrum of ecosystems necessary to meet the scientific, recreational, and aesthetic needs of this and future generations.
