Coal preparation practice in Western Germany

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6709523
The report was about the German coal preparation industry and it consisted of the following sections: general appraisal, organizations, economic factors, field data on plants, devices, and techniques. In the first section, general preparation practice, jig wash boxes, the heavy medium processes and special coal preparation projects were discussed. The second section was about development and construction, standardization of equipment and guarantees; in the third section, the report talked about price relationships; and in the other two sections, the field data of different plants and the different techniques used by the plants were given. The coal preparation industry in Germany was organized very much as in America. The dominant washing process was the jig which handled 87% to 88% of all the coal washed in the Ruhr area. Fine coal jigs, both with and without feldspar, were used almost to the exclusion of other methods for coal under 8 mm or 10 mm except that dust under 0.75 mm was commonly handled by froth flotation. The 10 mm x 0 was dedusted before washing; therefore it had great advantage in the subsequent dewatering of the coal and clarification of the water. Mechanical developments and dedusting devices included flash dryers, conveyor dryers, the resonance screens, froth breakers, and anti-breakage loading devices. The coal purifying methods which were used to produce very low-ash coal included multiple-stage froth flotation, controlled heavy suspension separation, electrostatic separation, acid extraction of the ash minerals, and tar-oil extraction of the coal matter. Each section in the above was described in detail in the report. It also described the differences in equipment for dedusting and gave a good description of purifying methods. 11 tables, 37 figures.
