Energy-saving fans
This article demonstrates that in order to minimize the power consumption of axial fans in air coolers or cooling towers, efficiency improvements have to be made to the fan itself, the drive system, the fan's environment, and the fan's operating point. Fan efficiency can be calculated by deriving a performance curve based on fan diameter, air flow, total pressure, density, horsepower and fan speed. Total pressure is the sum of static pressure and velocity pressure. One of the basic design criteria for blade design is to produce uniform air flow over the entire plane of the fan. For axial fans in air coolers or cooling towers, annual power savings of 50% or more are possible by using automatic fans over fixed-pitch designs.
