Crown thioether chemistry. The first homoleptic thioether complex of technetium and its potential application in tumor imaging

The first homoleptic thioether complex of technetium, [Tc(9S3)[sub 2]][sup 2+], undergoes facile redox interconversions to the corresponding Tc(III) and Tc(I) complexes. Coupled with the ability to tune redox potentials through variations in crown thioether ring size, these results raise the possibility of preparing Tc complexes that localize in tumors and other hypoxic tissues through a bioreductive trapping mechanism.
