Microwave-assisted resonant collisional energy transfer in Na Rydberg states

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)

The microwave-assisted resonant collisional energy transfer process Na(ns)+Na(ns)+h..nu -->..Na(np)+Na((n-1)p) is observed between two colliding Na(ns) atoms. The collisional resonance occurs when the microwave frequency ..nu.. equals the collisional energy defect ..delta..W/h. The observed cross sections are very large (approx.10/sup 8/ A/sup 2/) and require very low microwave power, approx.10 W/cm/sup 2/. These observations are in good agreement with an intuitive two-photon absorption model for these collisions.
