Pion interactions at medium energies. Progress report, December 1, 1981-November 30, 1982

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6704426
This report covers the intermediate energy research program undertaken by the University of Houston during the contract year December 1, 1981 to November 30, 1982. During this period data on the ..sigma.. hypernuclei /sup 6/H/sub ..sigma../ and /sup 16/C/sub ..sigma../ were analyzed and published. In addition, data previously acquired on ..lambda.. hypernuclei formed in the targets, /sup 13/C/sub ..sigma../, /sup 14/N/sub ..sigma../, and /sup 18/O/sub ..sigma../ were published. Recently, data have been acquired on the reaction (K;..pi..,..gamma..) with /sup 7/Li and /sup 9/Be targets. Hypernuclear ..gamma.. rays were observed and the data is under analysis. At the Los Alamos Meson Facility (LAMPF) work continued in the measurement of asymmetry in the reaction vector pp ..-->.. p..pi.. n. Not only is this reaction important in understanding the mechanism of pion production, but it also may help resolve the issue of dibaryon structure in nucleon-nucleon collisions. Work is continuing on the development of larger area drift chambers for use in experiment AGS 767. These detectors surround the target and measure annihilation track information. A scintillation hodoscope has been designed and tested for experiment AGS 756. It has 2 mm position resolution and high count rate capabilities. Experiment HHIF 3, Double Charge Exchange of Heavy Ions at Intermediate Energies, is to be undertaken at the Holifield Laboratory this fall.
