Canadian Bechtel Ltd., prime contractor, and Mannix Ltd., subcontractor, have maintained construction schedules on the Great Canadian Oil Sands complex near Fort McMurray in Northern Alberta so far through the winter, with few unexpected delays. When the giant complex finally goes into operation, huge excavators will dig 100,000 tons per day of oil sand from a vein 50 to 75 ft thick. A hot-water separation plant will recover 65,000 bpd of 6 to 8$ API bitumen from this, as feed for the coker. The 55,000 bpd of coker distillate then will be processed in a hydrogeneration system to remove sulfur and to yield a synthetic crude of 42.3$ API gravity. The crude will move by a 270-mile 12-in. pipeline to Edmonton, where it will link with the Interprovincial system for movement to eastern Canada and Northern U.S. refineries. Besides the construction work pilot operations have begun on mining and processing for the complex.
