Understand quantitative risk assessment: Part 1
- BAPCO, Awali (Bahrain)
Using safety-related evaluation tools such as quantitative risk assessment (QRA), hydrocarbon processing industry (HPI) managers can select projects that mitigate process/safety hazards, meet environmental/worker-safety mandates and are profitable. Because of limited resources, managers can't implement their entire project wish list. However, they must find a credible way to narrow the options. As a tool, QRA helps managers understand how much risk is involved with a hazard and quantify the magnitude of consequences with and without mitigation. The paper discusses what QRA can do, how safe is safe, the problem with small numbers, the cost of QRA studies, and environmental hazard criteria.
