Oil's shaken foundation. [The effects of the Gulf War on the petroleum industry and the global economy]

Journal Article · · World Watch; (United States)
OSTI ID:6702107
While the immediate effects of the Gulf War were loss of life and damage to the regions environment, it is clear that there will be greater long-term effects on the global economy. The Gulf region faces overwhelming economic, social, and political problems, and the changing patterns of oil production, as well as increasing demand, world-wide mean even more dependency on Mid-eastern oil. Unfortunately politics, not economics, seems to be the driving force in the oil markets. Short term oil bargins between the US and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are likely to be an excuse for not improving energy efficiency and developing energy alternatives.
