This paper discusses the U.S. Bureau of Mines' report 'Land Utilization and Reclamation in the Mining Industry, 1930-1980'. The report assesses land-use trends as an aid to the development of land-use policy decisions; it describes land-use in relation to other competing uses of land. Mining activity for each state is detailed, from the percentage of land used for mining, to acreage used and reclaimed for seven commodities: bituminous coal, clays, copper, iron ore, phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and stone. The major difference in reclamation procedures is due to extensive federal legislation covering the reclamation of coal mined lands alone. Whilst the mining industry has shown a downward trend in reclamation since the last report in 1971, 54% in 1980 compared to 80% in 1971, coal's record has improved over this period.
