Early claims of cold nuclear fusion generally have been dismissed by the world's scientific community, says Frank Close of Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the United Kingdom. There may have been a chemical reaction in the test tubes at the University of Utah, were Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann conducted their experiments, Close concedes, but there is no evidence, nor has there ever been, of watts from nuclear fusion. The absence of neutrons or other nuclear remnants from the Utah experiments is ample evidence to most scientists that no nuclear fusion took place, Close says. The fact that heat has been produced with both heavy and light water adds to the theory of a chemical reaction, he notes.
